Critique of artwork of choice
An artist named Sarah Weaver created an 18” by 24”, acrylic on a gessoed illustration board named “Boy behind the Mask”. The art displays the world-renown artist, Michael Jackson as a young boy placing a mask on himself that symbolizes what he looks like in the future. His arms are perched on top a table and there is a red curtain placed behind him. On the table, there is a red ball and a silver object along with another object that’s gold. There are many shapes incorporated such as circles, triangles, and other basic shapes.
The observations obtained from the first paragraph details partial similarities with each other and dissimilarities. Many of the colors in the artwork are not repeated, except red. The curtain behind Michael is red, the ball is red, and the lips on the mask are a glossy red that is brighter than all other three. In addition, you can notice the lighter and darker tone throughout the painting, which creates a spotlight that correlates with the red curtain. The shadows, choice of colors, and glossiness blend and overall create a very realistic look.
The basis of the artwork is clearly interpreted, but can be stated through different meanings for different people. Michael Jackson is a young boy like his ABC times and his entire expression is saddening as he puts on this mask. The mask is a representation of the person, appearance wise, he becomes later on in his life and the little boy he still was on the inside. The theatre setting explains how so much attention was on Michael and he was always in the spotlight, but at the end of the day he was not the man some people loved and some people hated, but wanted to feel he was still the kid everyone loved.
This artwork portrays its meaning it upholds and practically speaks for itself. The amount of time and effort is shown through Weaver’s use of shadows and colors, even small details such as the wooden table Michael leans on. Since I’ve always had a deep love for the artist Michael Jackson this artwork makes me feel more compassion for him because he never got to be who he wanted without people judging him for who he is. I feel this really captures how he felt and you can encompass the sadness of the entire thing, so it made sure not to filter that.
